Demolition of Cockton Hill Overbridge - Bishop Auckland

The existing Cockton Hill overbridge was in a poor condition and was marked for demolition.  Thompsons were appointed to demolish the structure, allowing for the installation of a new bridge by Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering.

The structure carried traffic and pedestrians from Newgate Street and over the rail line onto Cockton Hill Road.  The bridge was single span and of steel construction with a concrete deck.

Thompsons worked closely with the project Client (Rail Track) and BBCEL to plan the project.  The bridge was demolished during a road and rail closure and within a possession period, completing during a 12 hour night shift.

Thompsons commenced works by reducing the bridge abutments and the concrete of the bridge deck using a 360o excavator machine.  Following completion of preparation, as the residents of Bishop Auckland slept, the steel framed bridge structure was severed into a series of sections, with each section removed to a designated laydown area using a 500 ton mobile crane.

Thompsons Site Supervisor, Barry Brewis, and his team of operatives were professional throughout.  The works were carried out within the given time-frame and without accident or incident.
