Thompson\'s of Prudhoe discover something of archaeological interest............

A remarkable discovery of ancient animal bones has been made by Thompsons of Prudhoe at their Haughton Strother sand and gravel quarry in Northumberland. Thompsons machine operator local man John Rutherford was amazed to see a huge horned animal skull emerging from his excavations while removing sand and gravel from several metres below the ground surface.

Works will include the demolition of Gatesheads Trinity Square car park (known by many as the Get Carter Car Park or Gateshead Multi Storey Car Park), the associated in-door market, the adjacent Tesco Superstore and the properties that line Ellison Street, High Street and Trinity Square.

Ore Un-loader No.1 - Corus UK, Redcar Wharf

Thompsons have recently completed the dismantling of Ore Un-loader No.1, located at Corus UKs Redcar Wharf. The Ore-Unloader weighed approximately 1500 tonnes and stood at a height of 66m. The structure was dismantled into sections using oxy/propane hot cutting equipment. The sections, each weighing approximately 65t, were lifted from their resting position via the aid of a 1000 tonne crane and transferred into a processing area at ground level.

Newcastle City Library

Thompson\'s of Prudhoe have recently completed the demolition of Newcastle City Library. Located in the heart of the city, the building had been constructed in 1962. It was a four storey concrete framed building with panel infill.

Newcastle University (INTO Project)

Newcastle University's Old Forge Building and Joseph Cowen House (located between the Herschel Building and St. Thomas Street) are specified for asbestos removal, internal strip out and demolition. In addition, the adjacent Porter Building will be stripped of asbestos. The project will facilitate the later construction of residential accommodation for international students who wish to study in Newcastle.

The buildings are located within a sensitive location, close to operational University buildings, and adjacent to the Royal Victoria Infirmary and shopping areas. In addition public footpaths and highways run along the site boundaries, with Herschel Lane itself cutting through a portion of the site (and specified to remain open and unobstructed throughout works).

Thompsons of Prudhoe have been awarded the contract, which will be undertaken over a 20 week period commencing November 2008.

Works have been phased to allow our teams of asbestos removal and demolition operatives to ready the buildings for demolition via mechanical means, in line with the project programme.

Asbestos removal works completed mid-April 2009, allowing the remainder of the buildings to then be safely demolished. Demolition works were completed in May of 2009 and the site was then made-safe (June 2009) prior to construction works commencing.
