Thompsons New Demolition Apprentice

Thompsons are pleased to welcome our first demolition apprentice to the company, Thomas Easby.  Thomas contacted CITB-ConstructionSkills as he was interested in demolition and keen to work with a northeast based company.  Construction Skills in turn contacted Thompsons and explained the level of training that they could offer Thomas and the benefits or hiring a new apprentice.  Thompsons were more than happy to welcome Thomas to the company and to start his career in demolition.

At present Thomas is gaining valuable site experience, working closely with one of our Demolition Site Supervisors and his team of operatives at the Metro Centre in Gateshead.  The team are conducting internal strip out and selected demolitions for Sir Robert McAlpine, facilitating a multi-million pound investment at the shopping centre.  Thomas is very keen and his Supervisor is impressed with his willingness to learn.

In January of 2009 Thomas will attend the National Construction College in Bircham Newton to sit the first part of a 16-week residential course.  The course combines practical training with classroom-based lessons in all aspects of demolition work. This will provide him with training that is essential to his progression in the demolition industry.
In addition to his basic training Thomas will work towards his CSCS / CCDO card.  After one year he will sit the demolition health and safety touch screen test and will be assessed as a demolition operative 1 (labourer) by the National Federation of Demolition Contractors. He will then continue his training with a demolition NVQ and progression to a Mattockman (demolition operative 2) or Topman (operative 3).
