Tyne Tees Studios

Thompsons of Prudhoe are proud to have won the contract for the demolition of the old Tyne Tees studios. The studios originally built in 1959 created from two warehouses has been left standing since Tyne Tees moved to their new home over a year ago. This twenty two week project will see the building come down, car park removed and the land restored for future development. The work commenced in the second week of November. Tyne Tees studios was famous for broadcasting such shows as The Tube and Supergran.

Part of the existing studios is the Egypt Cottage, also included in the demolition, has been part of the studios for years but it existed before the studios were built. Orginally built in the early 19th century it was rebuilt in 1873. Former guests of the studios could be seen to be drinking in here, the bar also providing the latest in cutting edge music.

As with many buildings in the last century there is presence of asbestos. The asbestos is to be removed following strict company procedures and specific methods of works and will be removed whole and without damage, Thompsons of Prudhoe operatives are highly trained to do so. On removal the asbestos will be marked asbestos waste for disposal and taken to an appropriate site ensuring safety to the operatives and public at all times.

For the demolition of the building, operatives will work to a pre-determined method and sequence of works under the strict control of the Site Supervisor. The building has five studios within its grounds. The site will be controlled as a demolition exclusion zone during the period of the works by way of scaffolding and hoarding to protect the public from dust and debris at all times.

Once again, Thompsons of Prudhoe look forward to working on this project in the heart of the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
